Oh dear, oh dear - the festive season is fantastic, but it often stretches the waistbands and the purse strings…

The good news is that bean-based meals - the best meals! - can help with both these issues.

Meatless meals built around beans, lentils, vegetables and whole grains tend to be less expensive and offer more health benefits than meat.

On the health front, a plant-based diet, which emphasises fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, legumes and nuts, is rich in fibre, vitamins and other nutrients. Even reducing meat intake has a protective effect.

This might be a good time of year to replace protein foods that are higher in solid fats with choices that are lower in solid fats and calories. The fats in meat, poultry, eggs and high-fat dairy products such as cheese are considered solid fats, while the fats in seafood, nuts and seeds are considered oils. C’mon people, we can do this!
